Dr. Shira Weingarten-Gabbay is an Assistant Professor of Microbiology at Harvard Medical School and an Associate Member of the Broad Institute. She earned her B.Sc. in Medical Sciences from the Hebrew University, and her M.Sc. in Molecular Genetics and Ph.D. in Systems Biology from the Weizmann Institute of Science. She completed her postdoctoral training in virology at the Broad Institute and The Rockefeller University.
In 2025, she established the Laboratory of Systems Virology at Harvard Medical School, where her team integrates virology, synthetic biology, immunology, and bioinformatics to develop high-throughput technologies that decode viral genomes and reveal how viruses interact with the immune system.
Dr. Weingarten-Gabbay is a Searle Scholar and Beckman Young Investigator (BYI). Her work has been recognized with the Blavatnik Regional Award, the Edward Mallinckrodt Jr. Foundation Award, the RNA Society Award for Innovation in High-Throughput Biology, the Smith Excellence Award, and the Broad Institute Next Generation Award. In 2020, she co-founded the international Systems Virology Journal Club to spotlight new concepts and methodologies in virology.
