Jon Lai is Dan Danciger Professor of Biochemistry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY. His group has had long-standing interests in peptide, protein, and antibody engineering and the application of these methods for biomedical research. Recent project directions have included development of bispecific antibodies as enhanced therapies (relative to conventional monoclonal antibodies) against a range of targets including Influenza virus, Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever virus, and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia; as well as the use of phage display and structure-guided design to develop novel, immune-focused protein vaccine candidates. He received his B. Sc. (Hons.) in Biochemistry from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario in Canada, his native country. He then obtained his Ph.D. in Biophysics and Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin- Madison under the guidance of Prof. Samuel H. Gellman. He was Helen Hay Whitney Post-Doctoral Fellow from 2004-2007 at Harvard Medical School first with Prof. Christopher T. Walsh and then later with Prof. Stephen C. Harrison. He has been on the faculty at Einstein since 2007 beginning as an Assistant Professor and rising through the ranks. He was recipient of the Beckman Young Investigator Award, the Irma T. Hirschl/Monique Weill-Caulier Career Scientist Award, and the XSeed Award by Deerfield. He has coauthored more than 85 publications.
