Jonathan Carlson, PhD

Jonathan Carlson is Managing Director of Microsoft Research Health Futures, a team advancing biomedical generative AI to accelerate how medicine is discovered, developed, and delivered—guided by Microsoft's mission to empower every person to live a healthier life. His team builds multimodal AI that can reason across medical text, images, and the languages of biology, from DNA to proteins, cells, and immune systems. He collaborates closely with external partners to ground research and incubation in high-impact scenarios and works across the Microsoft ecosystem to bring innovations to the world. As a computational biologist, Jonathan has collaborated with dozens of labs worldwide and published over 100 papers at the intersection of machine learning, immunology, and virology. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Washington and a B.A. in biology from Dartmouth College.
